Small Cell

Small wireless facilities (“5G”) are coming to Beltsville (and Prince George’s County). Federal law mandates that the county allow small wireless facilities throughout our communities. However, County Executive Alsobrooks is proposing legislation to help mitigate the impact this will have on residents. A small wireless facility (“SWF”) is a cellular network facility capable of delivering high transmission speeds but at lower ranges. Generally, “small cell” refers to both the smaller coverage area of the wireless signal and the smaller size of the infrastructure. Many more small wireless facilities are needed to cover the same geographic area that a single, traditional macrocell tower would cover of the infrastructure. Thus, our neighborhood streets are going to see a lot of SWFs. To learn about small cell, visit http://bit.ly/SmallCellPGC.

On Tuesday, October 1, my office hosted an important community conversation on the potential relocation of the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing to the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center. Moving forward towards the end of the year, there will be an opportunity for public comment.
