Calverton Neighborhood's Birthday and 4th of July Celebration

Celebrate Independence Day and Calverton’s 53rd birthday all in one great annual event. Festivities will be Tuesday, July 4, from 10:45 am–1:30 pm at Calverton Park (adjacent to Calverton Elementary at 3400 Beltsville Rd). Come enjoy great food, games, face painting, live music, children’s entertainment, performers, and much more. Admission is free!

And then Tuesday evening, July 4, head to College Park for a free concert and fireworks at the University of Maryland in Lot 1 adjacent to Campus Drive off Adelphi Road. Concessions open at 5 pm, the concert begins at 7 pm, and the fireworks will begin at dusk (approx. 9 pm). Be sure to arrive early if you can because heavy traffic is expected to begin around 7:30 pm.

Reminder: July 14 Deadline to Apply for College Scholarship

Each senator and delegate is allocated funds for scholarships to students in their district who attend Maryland colleges. There are so many deserving students in Beltsville. With college tuition a struggle for many families, we need to do everything we can to help hard-working students get a good education. We can't help everyone with Senatorial Scholarships, but we can certainly help some.

To apply online for a 2017-2018 Senatorial Scholarship, students should visit www.senatorjimrosapepe.com/scholarships, and the deadline to apply is Friday, July 14. The application period has ended for a separate Delegate scholarship from Delegates Barbara Frush, Joseline Peña-Melnyk, and Ben Barnes, but look to apply early next year. Information on other financial aid for Maryland college students can be found at www.mhec.state.md.us.

Free Paper Shredding—Saturday, July 29

Behnke Nurseries on Route 1 is hosting a free paper shredding event on Saturday, July 29, from 8 am until noon (or until the truck is full). This is a great opportunity to safely and securely dispose of your unwanted personal documents. The event is free and open to everyone! The Beltsville Lions Club will be selling refreshments and raffle tickets, and it’ll also accept donations to benefit the community.
