Barbara B. Shanks, formerly of Beltsville and Silver Spring, residing in Gambrills, MD, passed on January 12 at the age of 91. Loving mother to Leslie Ann Nataro and Barbara Lord and stepmother to Donald Shanks and Charlotte Schmidt.
Barbara was preceded in passing by husband James B. Shanks, brother Clarence W. (Bill) Whitmore, and parents Edith and Clarence Whitmore. She was grandmother to Allison Dubit, Andrew Nataro, Lindsay Lord, Gregory Lord, Delphia Shanks, Tessa Shanks, Gwyneth Shanks, Brian Colley, and Deborah Colley, and great-grandmother to Everleigh Dubit, Elijah Lord, and Omelia and Ethan Nataro.
Barbara traveled extensively in her early retirement years. She was an avid gardener, a talented painter, and involved in choir, theatre, and the protestant church at Riderwood Village during her 18 years there before moving to Anne Arundel County to be near family. A memorial service will be held at the chapel at Riderwood Village, 3110 Gracefield Road, Silver Spring, MD, on Saturday, February 1, at 11 am.
