Ask The Expert August 2024

Hello everyone.  I hope everyone is having a great summer so far.

Things are really heating up outdoors and I thought of a few things to keep the younger folk busy as the sun beats down on us.

Here are a few ideas that can be both educational and enjoyable for kids.

Gardening: Teach them how to plant flowers, herbs, or vegetables. This involves learning about soil preparation, watering schedules, and plant care.

Basic Carpentry: Start with simple woodworking projects like birdhouses or small shelves. Show them how to safely use tools like hammers, nails, and screwdrivers.

Painting: Allow them to help with painting walls or furniture. Teach them about preparing surfaces, choosing paint colors, and applying paint evenly.

Cleaning and Organizing: Make a game out of tidying up different areas of the house. Teach them about sorting items, organizing spaces, and cleaning techniques.

Fixing Basic Household Items: Show them how to tighten screws, replace light bulbs, or fix a loose drawer handle. This teaches problem-solving and basic repair skills.

Cooking and Kitchen Skills: Teach them how to prepare simple meals or bake cookies.  A great way to slip math into summer.  This involves following recipes, measuring ingredients, and using kitchen appliances safely.

Electrical Safety: Educate them about electrical safety rules and how to unplug appliances safely. Show them how to use a voltage tester under supervision.

Water Conservation: Teach them about the importance of water conservation and how to check for leaks in faucets or toilets. Show them how to fix minor leaks.

Home Energy Efficiency: Discuss ways to save energy at home, such as turning off lights, adjusting thermostat settings, or using energy-efficient appliances.

Creating a Home Maintenance Checklist: Involve them in creating a checklist for regular home maintenance tasks like changing air filters, roof inspections, testing smoke detectors, or cleaning gutters.

By engaging kids in these activities, you not only teach them practical skills but also instill a sense of responsibility and ownership in caring for their living environment.

Bonus tip: During these hot days of summer.  Keep the curtains and drapes closed to keep the house cooler and save on energy bills.
