Getting Your Home Ready for Back-to-School and Fall
As summer winds down and families prepare for another school year, it is also the perfect time to prepare your home for the cooler months ahead. Back-to-school season can get busy quickly, but taking care of a few important home maintenance projects now can help keep your home comfortable, organized, and protected throughout the fall.
Start With the Roof
Summer storms, heavy rain, and strong winds can take a toll on your roof. Before fall brings cooler temperatures and falling leaves, take a look for missing, cracked, or lifted shingles. Pay attention to signs of water damage inside the home, including stains on ceilings or walls. Addressing a small roof problem early can help prevent leaks and more expensive repairs later.
Clean and Inspect Your Gutters
Leaves and debris can quickly clog gutters during the fall. When gutters cannot drain properly, rainwater may overflow and cause problems around the roof, siding, foundation, and landscaping. Have your gutters and downspouts cleaned and inspected before the leaves begin to fall. Make sure downspouts are directing water safely away from your home's foundation.
Check Your Windows and Doors
As temperatures begin to drop, drafty windows and doors can make your home less comfortable and increase energy use. Check around window and door frames for gaps, damaged seals, or signs of deterioration. Replacing older, inefficient windows can also improve your home's appearance while helping maintain a more comfortable indoor temperature throughout fall and winter.
Prepare Your Outdoor Spaces
Fall is a great time to inspect your deck, porch, railings, and fence. Look for loose boards, unstable railings, damaged posts, or other areas that may need attention. Making repairs now can help keep outdoor areas safer for your family and guests while preventing minor damage from becoming a larger project.
Get Organized for Back-to-School
Inside the home, create a designated area for backpacks, shoes, jackets, and school supplies. Organizing entryways, closets, kitchens, and homework areas can make busy mornings easier. It is also a good opportunity to clear out unwanted items and make space before everyone starts spending more time indoors.
Don't Wait Until the Weather Changes
Preparing your home for fall does not have to happen all at once. Start with the areas that protect your home from the weather, including the roof, gutters, windows, siding, and exterior doors. Then focus on outdoor spaces and interior organization.
A little preparation at the end of summer can go a long way toward preventing unexpected problems later. With school starting and fall right around the corner, now is the ideal time to make sure your home is ready for the new season.
