Members of the Beltsville Lions Club are mourning the death of Lion Richard “Rick” Zerbe, who passed away on 5 March. He served in several capacities in the Lions Club, including Club President, and Board of Directors member. He was a Melvin Jones Fellow. Rick was always friendly and outgoing. His presence will be sorely missed.

Rick retired from the U.S. Marine Corps as a Master Sergeant after decades of outstanding service. His military bearing was evident in his service as an usher at Emmanuel United Methodist Church.

The Club held its annual election of officers on 5 March. The new officers will serve from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027. Elected President is Lion Ted Ladd, Vice President Camillo DiCamillo, Immediate Past President Ervin Whitehead, Secretary Nicholas “Nick” Barbieri, Treasurer Andy Rolle, Membership Chair Mae Whitehead, and Board Directors Nancy Abernethy, Fatima Barrie, Timothy Brown, Mary Ann Hanson, Ann Ladd, Suzy Mendelsohn, Paul Melngo and Vicky Malengo.

Club members are looking forward to a health fair at Beltsville Academy scheduled for Saturday, 11 April, from 10 am to noon. They will provide free vision screening.

Also on the agenda is participation in Beltsville Day on 9 May from 10 am to 4 pm. The Lions plan to once again offer free vision screening to all.

The Beltsville Lions have worked to help people in the Beltsville community for 68 years. Our members are men and women who are committed to helping those less fortunate than they are. The help we provide is not publicized very often, but the effects of the help are good, and we know it.

We are part of a Lions District (22-C) that includes 50 Clubs in the five Maryland Counties of Montgomery, Prince George's, Charles, Calvert, and St. Mary's plus Washington, D.C. We often exchange visits with other Clubs and have made many friends who are also committed to helping others. There is a keen sense of camaraderie among Lions involved in this volunteer work. Maybe you should consider joining the Beltsville Lions Club. If so, drop a line to PO Box 252, Beltsville MD 20704, or find our display at Beltsville Day on 9 May.
