City of Greenbelt Welcomes Federal Court Ruling Protecting FBI Headquarters Project

Greenbelt, MD – The City of Greenbelt acknowledges the U.S. District Court ruling blocking the relocation of the planned FBI headquarters to the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, D.C. The ruling restores the path forward for the FBI headquarters project in Greenbelt.  

After years of federal review and a competitive selection process, Greenbelt was chosen as the best location for the FBI headquarters. The court’s ruling that the current administration’s effort to abandon the selected Greenbelt site and redirect funds towards the Reagan Building was unlawful and void, permanently barring actions and funding to advance that alternative relocation. 

“Greenbelt is ready to help deliver the modern, secure headquarters campus that the FBI needs to carry out its mission” said Mayor Emmett Jordan. “This decision honors a thorough federal process, respects Congress’s investment, and recognizes that Greenbelt was selected on its merits.” 

Benefits for Maryland, Prince George’s County, and Greenbelt

The potential benefits of the project extend far beyond Greenbelt and Prince George’s County. A new FBI headquarters will create local jobs, generate billions of dollars in economic activity for Maryland, and support new growth in communities served by Metro and MARC.  

The City of Greenbelt also recognizes the broader national importance of moving forward. Federal officials, Maryland’s congressional delegation, and Prince George’s County’s Executive and legal team have emphasized that Greenbelt was selected through a competitive and transparent process to provide a secure, cost-effective facility for the FBI’s workforce and mission. 

Acknowledging State and County Leadership

“We thank Attorney General Anthony G. Brown, Prince George’s County led by County Executive Aisha Braveboy, and the State of Maryland for standing firm on behalf of our residents and community throughout this fight,” Mayor Jordan said. “We hope this ruling will clear the way for construction of a modern FBI headquarters campus in Greenbelt, which the FBI truly needs.” 

Attorney General Brown and Prince George’s County Executive Braveboy filed suit in November 2025 to challenge the effort to shift the headquarters project away from Greenbelt. The court’s decision blocks the attempted diversion of congressionally appropriated funds and clears the path towards resuming the project in Greenbelt. 

The City of Greenbelt looks forward to continued collaboration with Maryland’s federal, state, county, and local partners to advance construction of a world-class, secure FBI headquarters campus in Greenbelt.
