HIGH POINT HIGH SCHOOL NEWS

Outstanding High School Seniors Recognized

   High Point High School had its annual Senior Awards Night on May 18, 2000 with more than 100 scholastic and scholarship awards given to students.

   Valedictorian Sharforaj Rajib and Salutatorian Darnelle Haye had the highest grade-point averages. Both will pursue higher education in engineering and chemistry, respectively. Haye is the recipient of a $10,000 scholarship from Project Excellence.

   The Superintendent’s Award is given to the male and female students who have high grade point averages and also have provided leadership and school service. The recipients of this award were Gina Junio and Mike Hall.

   The Beltsville Rotary Rose & Albert Behnke Scholarship Award provides for $4000 over a four-year period. Rotary member George Krzywicki presented this award to Rahel Abey.

   Allen Campbell gave the Harry Gudelsky Scholarship of $1,000 each to Shorforaj Rajib and Mike Hall.

   Lion Bob Young gave the Beltsville Lions Club President’s Student Service Scholarship to Dalia Matthews.

   Pastor Richard Davis presented Kervin Awuro with a scholarship from Emmanuel United Methodist Church in recognition of student service.

   Coach Ernie Welch recognized outstanding athletes. Debbie Beaucamp and Shayne Thurston for recognized for outstanding achievement. Scholar athlete awards were given to Alison Clarke and Kevin Wade. Shayne Thurston and Rashonda VanNess received athlete of the year awards.

   Other award recipients include Aeisha Gillespie (Francis G. Tracy Scholarship), Deborah Boukamp (Eagle Award), and Maureen Quinones (Edward J. Spindler Service Award).

   Kristine Brecht, Chair of the Foreign Language Department, noted that High Point High School is truly international. Students speak 40 different languages and come from 60 countries. The High School has an international exchange program of long standing with Germany and also with their sister school in Japan. Plans are underway to develop a program with Italy.
