Desperately Seeking Fosters – And Adopters!

We have reached that point in Kitten Season where almost all of our foster homes are full – but the kittens keep on coming! Beltsville residents, business owners, and employees continue to call Beltsville Community Cats (BCC) with reports of “kittens in distress”. We also continue to receive calls regarding friendly adult cats who appear to be abandoned pets. Calls have been coming in from all over Beltsville and beyond, including Chestnut Hills, Calverton, Home Acres, North Creek, Barclay Square Apartments, Maryland Farms Condos, industrial areas along Old Baltimore Pike, and more.

Would you consider helping us to help these adorable furry little creatures? Without new foster homes, we will soon be forced to leave adoptable kittens and abandoned pet cats out on the street, where they face an uncertain fate. Disease, cars, foxes, hawks and owls, and other hazards all take their toll. Frankly, many die. Baby kittens are especially vulnerable – studies have found that only 25% of those born in the wild actually survive to adulthood. In contrast, nearly all kittens that BCC takes into foster care not only survive – they get adopted!

Fostering kittens and cats is just not that hard, and BCC provides our foster families with a lot of support. First, we take the responsibility for whatever medical care is needed, including spay-neuter surgeries, vaccinations, and treating any illnesses that may come along. Although foster families typically buy the cat food and litter, BCC can provide a variety of supplies such as litter boxes, cat beds, and toys. BCC also has experienced cat fosters who can provide advice to our foster newbies on whatever questions you may have.

Some people say, I could never foster because I wouldn’t be able to give them up. But think about it. This means that lovable, adoptable cats may not have a pathway to finding a safe and secure forever home. The only way that these kittens and cats can get to an adoptive home is through caring people who give them a temporary place to stay. Just a few weeks or months of your time can have a huge and lasting impact on the lives of these deserving kitties. Fostering is a live-saving activity for the foster kitties and a life changing activity for the people caring for them.

Of course, if you ARE thinking about adopting a new feline family member, one of our sweet foster kitties could be your perfect match. You can find our adult adoptable kitties on PetFinder – but if you are interested in adopting a pair of young kittens, please reach out to us directly as most of the kittens in our “pipeline” are not yet showing on PetFinder.

If you are interested in serving as a short-term foster home, or in adopting, please contact us at hello@beltsvillecats.net or 240-444-8353.

Join Us in June

BCC’s Spring Yard Sale will be part of the June 13th Community Yard Sale sponsored by the Women in Faith at Emmanuel United Methodist Church. As in the past, BCC will be offering items for sale, showcasing adoptable kitties, and sharing information about BCC’s lifesaving work in the community. We will also be demonstrating humane trapping and recruiting volunteers to trap, transport, overnight kitties before and after surgery, and foster adult cats and kittens (long-term, short-term, and vacation fostering). Drop by to take advantage of great deals and explore ways to get involved with a great group of animal lovers who are providing an important service to our local community.
