Residents Organize Against Proposed ICE Expansion at Metro 1

Community members are organizing in opposition to the proposed expansion of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations at 6505 Belcrest Road in Hyattsville.

The Metro 1 building has long housed Prince George’s County services, including programs related to food assistance, healthcare and education. An ICE law office already operates in the building and has reportedly received permission to expand across the third floor. Opponents say the increased ICE presence could make residents fearful of visiting the building and accessing county services.

Organizers are encouraging residents to sign a petition opposing the expansion and participate in weekly rallies outside 6505 Belcrest Road on Fridays from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m.

A larger community rally is planned for Tuesday, September 8, at 10:00 a.m. outside the Prince George’s County Council meeting. Residents may also submit written testimony, sign up to speak before the Council or register to provide public comment.

Organizers say their goal is to keep Metro 1 a safe and welcoming location where all Prince George’s County residents can access essential public services.
