Obituary: Albert James Johnson


Albert James Johnson, 94, of Westminster, MD (formerly of Beltsville, MD), passed away Thursday, December 28, 2017, at Carroll Hospital Center. He was born December 11, 1923, in Branchville, MD, and was the son of the late Albert Lee and Annie W. (Hofmann) Johnson. Twice married, he was the beloved husband of the late Beatrice L. (Golden) Johnson, who predeceased him on November 2, 1987, and Willa (Kensinger) Johnson, his wife of 12 years.

Nicknamed “Ginn” as a child, he was a graduate of McKinley Tech High School in Washington, DC, with the class of 1941 and was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Forces. Ginn and Bea were the owners of “Johnson’s” general store and soda fountain in College Park (Branchville), MD, from 1949 until retiring in 1975. He went on to work as a school bus driver and bus lot assistant foreman for P. G. County, retiring again in 1992. The Johnson family lived in Beltsville from 1962 to 2005. He and Willa moved to Carroll Lutheran Village in Westminster in 2005.

Surviving in addition to his wife Willa are children by his first marriage: Glenn (Gloria) Johnson of Clarksville, MD; Gail Johnson of Laurel, MD; and Keith (Mary Louise) Johnson of Jupiter, FL. Survivors also include step-children Debbie (Larry) Wall of Clarksville, MD; Cindy (Rob) Rock of Frederick, MD; and Joan Kensinger of Seattle, WA; and his brother Lawrence (Rachel) Johnson of Clinton, NC. He was predeceased by Edith (Jack) Cochran, his sister, and her husband.

He also leaves behind five grandchildren: Kevin (Maria) Johnson of Wyndmoor, PA; Bryan (Kelly) Johnson of New Market, MD; Jason (Janell) Johnson of Clarksville, MD; Kayla Johnson of Germantown, MD; and Kyle Johnson of Palm Beach Gardens, FL. Also, step-grandchildren: Evan, Drew, and Tyler Wall and Robert and Michael Rock. He was blessed to see five great-grandchildren: Evelyn, Callista, Norah, Roselyn, and Jarrett.

Services were held in Westminster on January 3, 2018, and interment with military honors was at Fort Lincoln Cemetery in Brentwood, MD, on January 4, 2018.
