Oliver! Opens November 23rd at Laurel Mill Playhouse

Curt Sommers of Beltsville rehearses with the orphans of Oliver, opening at Laurel Mill Playhouse on Nov. 23.

A classic show is returning to the area this November. Laurel Mill Playhouse’s production of Lionel Bart’s Oliver is scheduled to open Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 23 and run through December 16.

According to Wikipedia, “Oliver! was the first musical adaptation of a famous Charles Dickens work to become a stage hit.” The streets of Victorian England come alive in as Oliver, a starving orphan in a workhouse becomes the neglected apprentice of an undertaker. Oliver runs away to London and falls in with a group of thieves and pickpockets led by the elderly Fagin. When Oliver is captured for a theft that he did not commit, the compassionate victim, Mr. Brownlow takes him in. Fearing the safety of his hideout, Fagin employs the sinister Bill Sikes and the sympathetic Nancy to kidnap Oliver back, threatening the boy’s chances of discovering true family. It is a wonderful show for the entire family featuring memorable songs such as Food, Glorious Food, Consider Yourself, Pick a Pocket and more.

This production is directed by John Cusamano of Laurel and features Beltsville’s own Curt Sommers in the role of Fagin. Tickets are on sale at the Laurel Mill Playhouse website, www.laurelmillplayhouse.org. Get them early because they are going fast. So come on out and support local theater this holiday season!
