    The "Bull Pen" December 2019

The Bulls 12U tackle football team finished the season with an impressive 7-1 record and made it all the way to the championship game. However, the LBE Knights, the same team they loss to during the regular season, just barely got the win with a final score of 6-7 for the championship title. Needless to say, the Bulls football season was very exciting with the 12U team winning 9 consecutive games and the other age groups showing lots of growth and improvement throughout the s

    The "Bull Pen" September 2019

2019 has been a historic year for 50th anniversaries, including: Apollo 11 landing on the moon, Woodstock, The Beatles’ Abbey Road, and if you didn’t know—Monday Night Football. In fact, this year marks the NFL’s 100th season. Tom Landry, head coach of the Dallas Cowboys for 29 seasons and two Super Bowl wins, stated: “Football is an incredible game. Sometimes it’s so incredible, it’s unbelievable.” Perhaps that is why its popularity continues to soar and why so many of our y

What is Resident's for a Better Beltsville?

Residents decided to join together on July 29, 2019, to fulfill an expectation they had when they moved to Beltsville. We all agreed that we wanted to foster a neighborly spirit within the communities that make up Beltsville and foster a civic pride in Beltsville itself. During our first meeting each expressed why they appreciate the communities that make up Beltsville in which they live, and the improvements we would like to see. The meeting participants were excited about t

    The "Bull Pen" August 2019

The Bull’s spring teams overall had a great season! I am proud to announce that the Bull’s 12U flag football team won the championship game. The 8U flag football team were runner-up in the tournament. As stated last month, all of the flag football teams made it to the playoffs, and all of the players, coaches, parents, etc. should be congratulated for their hard work all season long. Believe or not, but the Bulls football teams are already working hard for the fall tackle sea

    The "Bull Pen" July 2019

The Bull’s spring teams are headed to the playoffs! I am happy to report that all the teams have made it, including 6U, 8U, 10U, 12U, and 14U flag football and 10U and 12U baseball. The 12U coed baseball team went into the tournament as the 2nd seed. Their first-round game was quite the nail-biter and went into double overtime. After playing for three hours (typically games are a max of 2 hours), 12U lost but ended the season with pride and integrity! The 10U coed baseball wa

    The "Bull Pen" June 2019

Rain, rain, go away…come again another day; that sums up the April and early May games. While both the flag football and baseball teams have both played at least one game at the time this article was written, May 13, all teams have had 1 or more games canceled. Other than the rain, the Bulls’ spring 2019 season is off to a great start! We have seen a surge in new players, a very successful intramural t-ball pilot program, and my youngest win his first flag football game of t

    The "Bull Pen" May 2019

In last month’s edition, I introduced you to hometown inspiration Dior Ginyard to highlight the importance of playing sports. In case you missed the article, you can access it online at www.beltsvillenewstoday.com. I want to introduce you now to another local hero, Bryan Addis. Addis grew up in Beltsville playing baseball for the Beltsville-Adelphi Boys and Girls Club. He then played bas eball for High Point High School where in 1990 his team was a state finalist in the Maryl

    The "Bull Pen" April 2019

I have been writing the “Bull Pen” articles since January of this year to raise awareness about the Beltsville-Adelphi Boys and Girls Club as well as to talk about the importance of sports for children and youth. This month, instead of writing about the reasons to play sports, I want to introduce you to a real hometown inspiration. Dior Ginyard grew up in Beltsville playing football and to a lesser extent basketball. He graduated from High Point High School in 2006 and went o

    The "Bull Pen" March 2019

Thirty years ago, for one season, I was a cheerleader for the Beltsville-Adelphi Boys and Girls Club, and yes, I am in the picture from 1988. While cheerleading didn’t turn out to be my talent or passion, I still remember the fun time I had. I remember the cheers like it was yesterday because I know “Who rocks the house?” “The bulls rock the house, and when the bulls rock the house, they rock it all the way down!” Today’s cheerleading squad is Facebook famous, with Ahnah Atki

    The "Bull Pen" February 2019

On a cold Thursday evening in January, I had the pleasure to attend the 11U’s basketball practice. I learned quite a bit about the program from talking with parents, players, and coaches. One thing that struck me was how many players and coaches did not live in Beltsville and traveled great distances to play or coach for the Bulls, the name of the Beltsville-Adelphi Boys and Girls Club teams. Some of the parents grew up in Beltsville but have moved away while others had conne

    The "Bull Pen" January 2019

Did you know that the Beltsville-Adelphi Boys and Girls Club has been an all-volunteer club in existence for over 60 years? Well, starting this year, “The Bull Pen” will keep you informed on the club’s achievements, the various sports programs, and much more ongoing with the club. The club had a great 2018 season but is looking forward to an even better 2019. The club, as many of you are already aware of, is going through a transitional/rebuilding period. Yet, we are still st

Free or Affordable Local Activities for the Full-time Caregiver 2018 edition

My name is Maria, and I am a full-time mom living in Beltsville of a sweet and active 3-year-old boy named Leo. Filling time with an active toddler is a challenge, so I wrote an article in the December 2017 issue about free local activities. (A copy can be found in the Beltsville News' online archive in case you missed it and would like to read it.) In this article, I want to share some further-away-but-totally- worth-it activities to pass the time with a toddler. Storyville

Oliver! Opens November 23rd at Laurel Mill Playhouse

A classic show is returning to the area this November. Laurel Mill Playhouse’s production of Lionel Bart’s Oliver is scheduled to open Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 23 and run through December 16. According to Wikipedia, “Oliver! was the first musical adaptation of a famous Charles Dickens work to become a stage hit.” The streets of Victorian England come alive in as Oliver, a starving orphan in a workhouse becomes the neglected apprentice of an undertaker. Oliver runs away to L

A True Story Concerning the D.M.V (That’s Hard to Believe)

On July 24, I was cleaning out my purse when I noticed my vehicle registration was expiring in seven days and realized I had not received my new registration application. I was concerned and gave some thought to just how I could remedy this situation. Aha! I will go through the internet, I decided. So, I booted up my computer and pulled up the Department of Motor Vehicles. I followed the prompts, inputted my tag, and was directed to stay on the page while the computer searche

House Fire on Howard Court Claims One

Around 3:30 am on Saturday, May 12, fire crews responded to a house fire at 11405 Howard Court in Beltsville. According to the PG County Fire Department, when crews arrived the majority of the 2-story house was in flames. The fire was intense enough to prevent firefighters from entering the residence right away. A neighbor, Kathy Mellott, told NBC 4 they were “devastated because they didn’t know anyone was in there.” When the firefighters were finally able to go into the home
