BARC Named “Horticultural Landmark”

By Jim Butcher

At a February (2001) ceremony at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (BARC) that attracted over 100 people, the American Society of Horticultural Science (ASHS) named the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center-West the newest of the Society’s Horticultural Landmarks. In presenting the award, ASHS President, Paul L. Smeal, noted that ASHS began the Horticultural Landmark program in 1997 to commemorate a “public or private site with substantial regional, national or international impact.” The site may have historical, scientific, environmental or aesthetic merit. Associate Director Ron Korcak accepted the award for BARC.
