Community theater is one of the most valuable resources a town can have. It makes the arts accessible to everyone, strengthens community bonds, develops essential life skills like communication and teamwork, provides a platform for creative expression, and fosters empathy by exposing audiences to diverse stories. Beyond that, it even boosts the local economy while serving as a hub for social connection, education, and artistic growth—bridging generations and backgrounds through shared experiences.

What you may not realize is that Beltsville and the surrounding area are rich with artistic opportunities. Within just a 30-minute drive, you’ll find several thriving community theaters offering something for everyone to enjoy.

UpStage Artists

Right here in Beltsville, we have our very own community theater—UpStage Artists. Founded in 2019, this group has spent the past six years creating countless opportunities for local performers and theater lovers alike. Their seasons are eclectic, ranging from Shakespeare to classic comedies such as Arsenic and Old Lace and The 39 Steps, moving dramas like Driving Miss Daisy and A Raisin in the Sun, and mysteries from Agatha Christie including And Then There Were None and The Mousetrap. They also present family-friendly productions that give children the chance to participate on stage. One of their best features? Tickets are under $15—among the most affordable in the region. Laurel Mill Playhouse

Just down the road in historic Laurel is Laurel Mill Playhouse, a charming black-box theater located in a 100-year-old renovated home on Main Street. With more than four decades of history, this theater is still going strong, producing eight to ten shows every year. Their season spans musicals, dramas, and comedies—so you’re almost guaranteed to find something you’ll enjoy. For more information, visit www.laurelmillplayhouse.org

Greenbelt Arts Center

Head the other direction and you’ll find the Greenbelt Arts Center (GAC). GAC produces its own shows and partners with resident groups such as The Rude Mechanicals to bring innovative productions to life. Known for putting unique twists on classic works, GAC is a place where you’ll always see something unexpected and engaging. Their mission is “to provide a dedicated and sustainable entertainment and educational hub for fine and performing arts that enriches the life and cultural heritage of Greenbelt and surrounding communities.” Find out more at www.greenbeltartscenter.org

Live theater is an art form best experienced in person, and fortunately, Beltsville residents have plenty of opportunities close to home. This fall, why not spend an evening at one of these local theaters? You’ll be supporting the arts, your neighbors, and the cultural life of our community.
