UpStage Artists is always on the lookout for exciting and family-friendly productions, and this summer, they are diving into the world of superheroes with The Adventures of a Comic Book Artist: The Musical — a lively show designed for children and families of all ages to enjoy.
In this imaginative and unique musical, Stanley Leonardo Sappovitz dreams of becoming a comic book artist, creating heroes and villains for the comics he adores. Working as a janitor at Wonder Comics, Stanley eagerly hopes his boss, D.C. Wunderman, will one day discover his drawings and give him the break he has been waiting for. That break comes — but not quite as expected!
In a desperate attempt to save his struggling company, Wunderman purchases a set of magical pens said to bring any character drawn to life. When the artists at Wonder Comics accidentally create the villainous Doctor Shock Clock, chaos erupts. It is up to Stanley to save the day by drawing his own team of superheroes: the charismatic (if egotistical) Star Guy, the lightning-fast Triple Time, the eco-conscious Blossom, and the delightfully cranky Wombat Woman. The heroes battle Shock Clock and his sidekicks, the Minutos, but in the end, the day may be saved by the most unlikely hero of all — Eraser Man. Who will triumph? Come see the show to find out!
The cast of Comic Book Artist features talented young performers from Beltsville, Greenbelt, Laurel, and College Park. More than just an entertaining romp, it is a heartwarming story about discovering who you are and standing up for what is right.
The show runs for approximately 75 minutes and includes one 15-minute intermission. Tickets are just $10 — a reflection of UpStage Artists’ commitment to making live theater accessible to all. Performances will take place on July 25, 26, and August 1 at 7:30 p.m., and July 27, August 2, and August 3 at 2:00 p.m., at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 11416 Cedar Lane, Beltsville, MD 20705.
Get your tickets at www.upstageartists.com. As a special bonus, all children in attendance will receive a free How to Draw book, while supplies last.
