Young people, 16 years and older, have the right to work

Most people know that age discrimination against older people is illegal. But many, including employers, don’t know that in Maryland age discrimination against young people is illegal too. Generally, 16 and 17 years can work legally with permission of their parents and a work permit. Meanwhile all 18, 19, and 20-year olds can legally without a permit. But some employers in Maryland continue to say they won’t hire anyone under 21 or under 18. If you or someone you know have been the subject of age discrimination in the workplace or application process, please contact the Maryland Commission on Civil Rights.
