Balancing the State Budget 

Balancing the state budget in a tough economy remains a significant challenge. The layoffs of federal employees and contractors, along with the closure of federal agencies, continue to impact Maryland’s families, businesses, and the state budget. At the same time, rising utility rates and gas prices are putting additional pressure on the state budget, just as they are on family budgets. As a result, the Governor and the legislature have had to make major budget cuts this year while still working to protect investments in education, public safety, health care, and other critical priorities.

 

Help With Pepco and BGE Bills

For those needing help with Pepco and BGE bills, resources are available. If you are a BGE customer, you can visit https://bge.com/heretohelp to find ways to manage your bill, use energy more efficiently, or access energy assistance programs. These include an Assistance Finder, state programs, budget billing, and payment arrangements. Pepco customers can call customer service at 1-800-424-8028 between 7:00 AM and 8:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Additional information is available at https://www.pepco.com/billsupport where you can find an Assistance Finder, energy-saving tips, and options to schedule an energy consultation.

 

Help With Your Taxes

If you need help with your taxes, free assistance is available through April 15. The AARP Foundation offers in-person tax assistance and preparation through its Tax-Aide program. IRS-certified volunteers provide this service to anyone, regardless of age. To find a Tax-Aide site or learn more about what documents to bring, visit aarpfoundation.org/taxhelp or call 1-888-AARPNOW (1-888-227-7669).

 

Senate and House College Scholarships for Beltsville Students

College scholarships are available for Beltsville students. Delegates Joseline Peña-Melnyk, Ben Barnes, Mary Lehman, and Senator Jim Rosapepe award scholarships each summer. Applications for the 2026–27 school year are posted on the 21st District Delegation website. In preparation, students should ensure they have a Maryland College Aid Processing System (MDCAPS) account at https://mhec.maryland.gov/ and complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at https://studentaid.gov/.
