New online portal for Maryland taxes

Beginning September 1, individual Maryland taxpayers may use the online Maryland Tax Connection for filing income tax returns, making estimated payments, setting up payment plans, and more. Tax Connect is already in use by Maryland businesses to file returns and communicate directly with the Comptroller’s office. Now, it will be free to use to all Maryland individual taxpayers. Need help with your water bill?

The WSSC Water fund is now managed by the United Way of the National Capital Area (NCA). This transition will be a continuation of assisting customers with financial need through the Water Fund. Customers may still receive up to $500 in assistance in a rolling 12-month period. Customers may now apply online at unitedwaynca.org/wsscwater.

Back-to-School Vaccine Clinic September 12 at High Point

As we prepare for the new school year, Prince George’s County Public Schools and the Health Department are hosting free Back-to-School Vaccine Clinics. These events will include food, backpack giveaways, and family fun; while helping students get the immunizations, they need to start school healthy and strong.

Maryland State Law requires all students to receive immunizations for school. This year, students must be up to date with all required immunizations by September 14 or risk being excluded from school. Weekend clinics will occur September 12 from 9AM to 3PM at High Point High School in Beltsville.

Constitutional Amendment Clarifying Congressional Redistricting

In this November election, you’ll be able to vote for the Constitutional Amendment clarifying Congressional redistricting rules in Maryland. As you may have heard, the Maryland General Assembly held a special session on redistricting in early August. The Assembly approved a proposed constitutional amendment about the rules for drawing Maryland's congressional maps. Now that it has passed, it will go to a popular vote this November. If ratified by voters, the amendment will address the constitutional barriers that a Maryland court used to block the congressional map passed in 2021. This will give the legislature clearer authority to draw lines as other states have done. The amendment does not, by itself, draw new congressional districts. It gives Maryland voters the chance to decide whether the state should have the flexibility to act under the same set of rules and standards as other states across the country.

Moratorium on new big data centers in Prince George’s

A few weeks ago, the Prince George’s County Council passed a two-year moratorium on big data center development to give our county more time to develop policy on the matter which protects our environment, electricity rates, and communities. The County Council and the County Office of Permitting, Inspections, and Enforcement continue to oversee the consideration process for all data center projects in the county.
